| The Larson Family Winery Today
As a young boy growing up in Berkeley, Tom Larson would often come to Sonoma to visit his grand mother at their 101 acre ranch on the bend of Sonoma Creek. He spent many days exploring and working on the property while listening to his family's stories about real life cowboys, and seeing black & white photos of rodeos, Brahma steers, racehorses and steamboats that filled the rooms of the original farm house where his family has lived since 1899.
Tom's love of the land made him return to the ranch years later to add a new chapter to the dynamic history of his family and the property at the end of Millerick Road. In 1977, Tom and his father, Bob, planted 40 acres of Chardonnay vines, and in 1987 they established what is now the Larson Family Winery. "When we made 40 tons of wine, I figured we'll drink what we can and sell the rest" said Tom.
Today, the Larson Family Winery sits nestled in the middle of 70 acres of vineyards. The civil war-era farmhouse is now known as A Captain's House and is available as a vacation rental. The redwood barn, once the livestock barn that Tom and his family built together years ago, now houses the winery's tasting room. Visitors to the winery are often happily greeted by the winery dogs, Ruff, Max & Sunny, Dolly the Llama and a sheep named Spongebob. "Being at the winery is like going back in time, it hasn't really changed, it's quiet and off the beaten path and even still looks the same as it did back when I was a kid, only now it's surrounded by grape vines" says Tom.
Visitors shouldn't be mistaken by the down home atmosphere at the winery, their wines are world class and the Larson family is the driving force behind the winery's persona. Larson Family wines reflect the values of the family and its heritage. They have an honest and straightforward reputation built on hard work and their love of the land. Today, the Larson portfolio of wine reflects the renown quality and diversity of Sonoma viticulture and is comprised of super-premium varietals and ultra premium reserve and vineyard designated wines. The Larson wines are true-to-type, flavorful, ready-to enjoy and consumer-friendly.
Tom and his wife, Becky, strive to keep the winery a fun, casual place where people can come to relax and enjoy their wine. They also want it to be a place where the employees feel like part of the family.
The Tasting Room is open seven days a week, from 10am-5pm. Tom & Becky invite you to come enjoy the large picnic area with beautiful views of the Carneros Region, and maybe even try a game of Bocce ball on the regulation size bocce court. The court is free to the public and open during the tasting room hours.
